Cemeteries in Zeytinburnu |
|

Cemeteries and their green meadows cover a large area. There are cemeteries of several different religions. Many grave stones exist in these cemeteries representing the characteristics of the era they come from.
The history of the cemeteries (Muslim and non-Muslim) in Zeytinburnu district go back to very past dates. These uninhabited areas were never used for settlement reasons neither by the Byzantines nor by the Ottomans; they have always been spared for cemeteries and at a later stage for erecting tekkes, churches and the like.
Zeytinburnu cemeteries are open to new burials since the conquest of the city. The oldest of them all has gone down in history as the Topkapı cemetery. It is believed it goes as back as the time of Sultan Mehmet II. The Conqueror (1453-1481).
In the Topkapı cemetery are the monumental tombs of the 8th President Turgut Özal, Adnan Menderes, Hasan Polatkan and Fatin Rüştü Zorlu. At the Kazlıçeşme cemetery is the Yedişehitler Mezarı (Tomb of Seven Fallens).
