Zeytinburnu

Zeytinburnu is one of the most important connection points of Istanbul housing many civilizations until today.

Precious parts of the culture mosaic such as Yenikapı Mevlevi House, the lodge of whirling dervishes, Merkez Efendi who cured the people for years, Zoohodos Piyi Church in which many Orthodox Patriarchs rest, fountain giving cure to those drinking water and sacred fountains are in this district.

Surrounded by the water in the south, Zeytinburnu district is separated from the peninsula with city walls.   Seashore measuring approx. 2600 meters starts from Yedikule door and strands to the district of Bakırköy.
Used as recreation and relaxation place by the people of Istanbul before it was dwelled, Zeytinburnu turned into an area where many trees with or without fruit grown.  Trees such as pine, cedar and fir in Silivrikapı, Merkezefendi, Kozlu, Yedikule and Kazlıçeşme graveyards create a pleasant atmosphere.

Name of Zeytinburnu
The word "Zeytin" (means olive in Turkish) in Zeytinburnu comes from olive trees grown at shore line in the south of the district during the times of Priests from Jerusalem; and "burun" (means nose in Turkish) from point of the land advancing thorough the sea between Yedikule and Bakırköy.  The district that was called "Zeytinli Burun" spelled as "Zeytinburnu" during time.
